Innovation, Growth, and the Distribution of Human Capital
We develop a dynamic equilibrium model of growth in which there are two innovative activities: variety expansion and quality improvement. Workers are heterogeneous in their ability, and we show that in equilibrium the high ability labor engages in variety expansion, middle ability labor in quality improvement, and low ability labor in production. We establish the existence of a balanced growth path for the autarkic equilibrium and establish the relationship between the distribution of ability and equilibrium rate of economic growth in the autarkic equilibrium. We examine how the opening of trade affects the growth rate and the distribution of income.
