Abstract:
In this paper, we investigate whether Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) inflows ameliorate or deteriorate export quality of indigenous domestic firms in the same industry. Relying on FDI regulation change upon China's accession into WTO that generates plausibly exogenous variations in FDI inflows across manufacturing industries, we find a significant negative spillover effect. Firms facing more FDI presence within the industry tend to export lower quality products. And the average lower quality is mainly driven by firms adding lower quality products, dropping average quality products, while keeping the quality of continuous products unchanged. Further tests show that Chinese firms in FDI-liberalized industries face more competition from FDI in both domestic and international markets. We propose a dynamic multi-product firm model to give insights to the findings.
